As we approach the new year, I know that a lot of us are working on goals that we want to accomplish. Almost years ago, I decided that I wanted to create a living online. It may seem impossible, but it actually can be done. I’m sharing what it is really like to work online, and how you can start doing it ASAP!
You have to start somewhere
Before I began working on creating a job I loved, I spent a long time working at jobs I hated. From retail to bartending, I think I have had my toes in everything! I did not actually know anyone who worked online, so it never occurred to me that I could. After I was laid off from one of my jobs, I went into somewhat of a depression.
Sitting on my mother’s couch, I decided that I was finally going to start that blog I had always dreamed about. After researching everything on Pinterest, I started up my very first blog. It sucked at first, I eventually was able to bring in some income though! Flash forward to now and I’m glad I spent all of those hours fighting with WordPress.
Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket
You have to be realistic here, although you want your income from one place, when you work online that doesn’t always happen. In addition to my blog, I have worked as a social media coordinator in a remote position, and I also have been freelance writing for years. By spreading out your income, if something doesn’t work out, then you at least have something coming in, and that minimizes the risk.
I found my social media position through ProBlogger Job Board, and all of my freelance writing is through UpWork. If you have a resumé ready, then I highly suggest you try either of these platforms. Upwork requires you to be approved, but it is relatively easy!
Am I happy with it?
I’ve never been happier with another job that I have had. Not only do I get to use my creative skills, but it is also nice being your own boss in a way! I’ve been able to experience a lot more than I would have otherwise, and I have also learned quite a few valuable skills along the way.
One negative is that even when I am traveling, my content is still going up. While I could take a break (and sometimes I do!) I enjoy being consistent, and I have found that it really makes a difference in how successful my blog is, and how many people I am able to reach. I’ve actually made a post about how I get work done while traveling you should check out!
There are times when I get stressed out if I have deadlines coming up, but it has taught me great tips on time management. Since I not only write for this blog but others, it has also helped me explore different writing styles that I may not have been able to with a more traditional job!
