Are you being authentic?

Authentic is kind of a hot word right now, it seems that everyone has an opinion, and they really aren’t afraid to share it. With the rise of social media came a rise of wanting to “live our best lives”. One of the biggest struggles that I see across social media platforms, and even in myself, is constantly wondering if you’re being authentic enough. If you have any of the following three habits, it might be time for a reality check.

Are you posting what YOU want?

Hi, this is the pot calling the kettle black. There have been so many times on social media, mainly Instagram, where I was posting what I thought someone else would like. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to take a great photo and produce amazing content, there is an issue when you just aren’t being who you are. If you find yourself posting what you think other people want to see, you’re really not being authentic! Social media is called social media for a reason. If you are having a bad day, be honest! Maybe you made an amazing salad for lunch, share it! What makes you stand out in the sea of content creators is the fact that none of them are you.

You’re thinking about it too much

We have all been there, right? We think something isn’t good enough so we sit and overthink it until it drives us crazy. Trust me, I overthink a lot! If overthinking burned calories, I would probably be dead. While there is nothing wrong with having a theme and anesthetic, if it is causing you to not be your authentic self, then there is a problem. I’ve mentioned this in the post I did concerning the Instagram Blackout earlier this year, but you don’t own social media. What is the point of stressing about something that you ultimately have zero control over?

It just isn’t fun anymore

I’ve been doing quite a bit of soul searching over the past few years. One of the biggest lessons that I want to share with you is that if you’re not enjoying something, you should stop doing it. If your Instagram feed is keeping you up at night, you need to address that issue head-on. Plus, it is really hard to be happy when you’re doing something that isn’t who you are. I recently wrote a post that shares how to know when enough is enough that covers this topic more!

Great post! I was stressing so much about social media that I just took a step back. Now I post when I can and live my best life by being in the moment. I don’t own social media platforms and I’m tired of letting them own me.

I’m right there with you Amanda! I caught myself letting them rule my life, and I knew I had to do something. I’ve been posting what I like and if someone doesn’t like it, someone else will!

I think this is a great post! I can completely relate to overthinking and just wanting to make content that makes readers happy. Sometimes, it’s easy to lose ourselves in the process if we aren’t careful.

It can be so easy to do that!

Thanks for sharing! It can be so hard to find the right balance between being yourself and producing content that your audience wants and I couldn’t agree with this post more. It is so important to do what you actually want and to stop overthinking so much. Thanks again!

So welcome Marissa! I think it is something that we all are struggling with right now!
